Math - We continued our investigation of Canadian money. This week we looked at the Toonie, and also continued practicing identifying the names and values of each coin as well as adding coins together to see total amount. We had the opportunity to put this into real life action when we paid for our "Cooking in the Classroom" items at the grocery store on Tuesday. This grocery store visit was a hit! We loved making our list, locating all of the items we needed and checking them off. We also talked about choosing apples that were not bruised or dented.

Art - This week in Art we used leaves that we found to stamp leaf prints on our large fall tree mural.

Science - On our leaf hunt on Monday, we found a tree with hundreds and hundreds of ladybugs. Naturally, we were very curious to learn more about ladybugs. We decided to research and learn a little more about lady bugs. We learned several new things. Ask your learner what they remember about ladybugs.

On Thursday we learned about Terry Fox, and participated in a school wide Terry Fox Run/Walk. The students enjoyed gathering with the school to Walk for Terry!

 Hello Room 3 Families!

Happy Friday!

This week in Room 3 we continued our exploration of letters in the alphabet, their letter sounds, practiced printing these letters, and being able to identify words that begin with the letter of focus. Letters we looked at this week were: A, G, D, S and E.

As we prepare for the first day of Fall on September 22, We have been discussing what kinds of things we have been noticing have been changing as Summer nears its ends. We read the book If Winter Comes, Tell it I'm Not Here by Simona Ciraolo. This is a beautiful book about what we can expect when Summer leaves, and the season change from Fall to Winter. It compares and contrasts signs of Summer Vs. Fall and Winter and the activities we do in each. The students did some writing:

"I will miss _______________ most about Summer"

and

"I am looking forward to _________ most about Fall".

In Math, we have been exploring Canadian coins. We have so far explored the Nickel, the Dime, the Quarter and the Loonie. We have discussed their differences, how to recognize each coin and how much each coin is worth. We have continued to learn and play new Math Games. Each day we also solve a Problem of the Day where we look at a Math word problem and solve it together.

With Technology this week, we did a Quiz Game called Kahoot! This is a fun way for us to practice using a computer while also reviewing things we are learning in class! It was a lot of fun.

In Art, we worked together to paint a large tree and also used marbles on a tray to paint leaves. It was different but the students enjoyed rolling the marbles through paint and trying to keep their marble on the tray.

Science is something our class looks forward to each week. Our Science experiment this week was interested and fun! We coloured coffee filters, hung them in a clear cup and slowly poured water into the cup. It was neat to see our water magically turn the colour we coloured the coffee filter.

The long anticipated end of Summer celebration at Abbey's Ice Cream was a big success. We enjoyed our walk to Abbey's, practiced ordering, paying and receiving our change. The weather was beautiful and it was a nice way to say good bye to Summer until next year! Thank you for sending your child with money in support of this special activity.

Thank you for making time to come to our Open House. It was nice to meet some of the families of our Room 3 students at the Open House on Thursday evening.

I have enjoyed getting to know all of your children so far and learn about all of their unique gifts and talents. We have so much fun every day. Ms. Bradley (our amazing EA) and I feel so fortunate to work with your children each day. It's going to be a wonderful year of learning, fun and growth!

Wishing you a lovely weekend!

Sincerely,

Miss Karly

Hello Room 3 Families!

It was another wonderful week in Room 3! This week was “Dot Week” and we incorporated dots and circles into a lot of our learning. In Math we discussed Circles. We brainstormed what kinds of things are circle shape in our environment. Some things we came up with were, tires, a variety of different balls, the door on a washing machine, a clock and several other things. The students transformed regular circles into so many different circular shaped things. It was a fun activity.

We also read the book, 10 Black Dots by Donald Crews. This book explores different numbers of black dots on a page and how we can create different things with dots. Some ideas the students came up with, were a Garbage Truck using 3 Black Dots, a Rollerblade using 4 Black Dots, an Army Tank using 7 black dots, and a Robot using 10 black dots.

We discussed how there are dots on dice and on dominos and used them as tools to create and solve addition questions.

In Literacy, we continued to explore letters in the alphabet. This week we took a closer look at the letters M, I, U, C, and O. We introduced the “Weekend Report”, which we will do every Monday (or the first day of our school week) to practice using our recalling and retelling skills.

We had the opportunity to explore some educational games on the computer this week. We played some different math and literacy games, and explored Epic! Books which has a large online catalogue of books that the students enjoy reading themselves or listening to. We will continue to build upon our computer literacy skills throughout the school year.

I would like each student to bring a pair of headphones for use at school on the computer as it can get quite loud when the students are all doing different activities on the computers. If you could send your child with a pair of headphones (please label) with a normal headphone jack at your earliest convenience that would be much appreciated.

This week we began focusing on social-emotional learning. This week we discussed the topic, “It’s Okay When Someone Say’s No”. We talked about how sometimes our friends, or teachers or family may tell us “No”. We discussed how sometimes hearing “No” can make us feel sad, disappointed or angry. We talked about the importance of controlling our emotions and bodies when these feelings rise up inside of us. Some strategies we can use are:
-Deep breathing
-Walking away to a safe place
-Using a calm voice to express our feelings/ask questions
-Drawing a picture to represent how hearing no makes us feel.

We did our first Science experiment this week. We discussed Science Experiment safety before we began our first experiment of the year. This week we asked the question. If we light a tea bag on fire what will happen? We talked about what a hypothesis is, how it is a guess about what we think might happen. Some hypothesis’ we had for this experiment was “It will burn in half” and “it will shoot up into the sky”. We tried the experiment many times it was very exciting.

We did some Explorative Art this week, using toilet paper rolls, circle stickers, bingo dabbers, and circular paper cutters. We read the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds which has the message that everyone is an artist, you just have to start by making a mark!

Community Walk to Abbey’s Ice Cream:
Next Thursday, September 19, we will be walking from our school to Abbey’s Ice Cream. This is a “Good Bye, Summer” Celebration, as the first day of Fall is on September, 22.

If you would like your child to be able to get ice cream, please send them with $5.00 cash on Thursday, September 19. We will practice some important life skills, such as ordering, paying and accepting/counting change.

Open House:
Next Thursday, September 19, Terrace Road School will be hosting a casual, come and go, Open House from 5-7pm. This is an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and see the space in which they are learning in each day. This is not a formal meeting and we will not be discussing individual student’s academic progress or challenges. If you would like to discuss your child’s learning, or any other specific questions regarding our programming please arrange an alternative time where we can meet in private.

Library Book Exchange:
On Tuesday, our class went to the Library at school for the first time this school year. It is a nice opportunity for the students to explore a variety of books and choose 1 or 2 that they would like to borrow for the week. If you could please send your child’s library book(s) back to school with them each Monday we can ensure they can check out new books on Tuesday our Library day.

This Week:

We had a great first full week in Room 3! This week we reviewed our classroom rules and expectations. In Literacy we introduced our Letter of the Day. Each day this week we investigated a new letter, brainstormed as a class things that begin with that letter and practiced printing these letters. We also made a classroom book called "Rockin' in My New School Shoes!" which was inspired by Pete the Cat Rockin' in my School Shoes by Eric Litwin. In Math, we have been looking at different strategies we can use when adding. We also learned a new game using 10 Frames, a dice played with a partner or in a group.

The students also enjoyed time in Music class this week with Mrs. McMillian.

We also had our first visit to the gym this week where we learned some new cooperative games. The students have Phys-Ed time each day where we will play games and learn new skills.

We went on a walk in our school neighbourhood and did a scavenger hunt looking for all of the different signs we see in our community. We talked about what all of the different signs mean and how signs can give us useful information.

We have enjoyed a variety of art projects this week! We have been busy decorating our classroom with all of your little artists touch!

Today Mr. Buchanan dropped off Slurpees for all of the staff at Terrace Road School. The kids were very interested in all of the different flavours in the slurpee and wanted to give it a taste. So we divided the slurpee up and shared it. Room 3 students were excited about this special and unexpected treat! We had such a fun week in Room 3! I have loved getting to know your learners so far!

I am looking forward to another great week next week!

Please feel free to connect with me if you have questions or comments!

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!
